Major Pre-Production: Choice of Fonts

I have been looking into the style and design of the film, as we haven't been able to find a suitable artist to create art work for us, we are going to create some ourselves. This was not ideal for us as it was not our original plan, we were going to commission an artist but the ones I have spoken to say they wouldn't have enough time or would like to be paid with a price that is way out of our budget. This may change in the near future but for now we will create some art that is suitable for our film.

The first step I have taken is looking for a suitable font for the production, it has to be readable and a simple style to relate the film. One of the other factors I have looked into is into decaying fonts, so it appears as it has dissolved partially or that parts have broken away off of it. The reason I looked for a font such as this is as it will relate to the story of the film, the illness Abigail has. Bellow are a few examples of what fonts I am currently looking at, it is likely that one of these fonts will be the one I choose for the book.

'GLOW' by Douglas Jessup

'GLOW' is a short sci-fi film by Douglas Jessup. It was the winner of the 2014 Panavision Future Filmmaker Award, which was one of the reasons I want to look at it, this is because it shows that the film must be good and credible in some way. Other reasons I wanted to look at this film is to see how they have directed and set up the film, fitting a whole story into a short amount of time with it still making sense and telling a story well, and also the colour treatments and special effects used within the film.

Factors I liked:

 - The way suspense is built through scenes without dialogue and just showing it instead (e.g. facial expressions, objects)

 - Music suited the film's emotion

 - Movement in most shots, aided in keeping interest and makes the audience look more at whats on screen

 - The colours used, followed the green and blue tints I planned to use in my style

- Realistic yet minimalistic special effects

Factors I did not like:

 - Fade effect between scenes

 - Story was not that clear

I have learned a lot from analysing this film. It has shown me interesting ideas and filming styles for 'Inoculum'. I have taken note of the positioning of some of the shots and also uses of speeding up and slowing down footage.
