Digital News Production (Planning 21)

We have tried to contact a local business that sells organic food boxes. The local business is called 'Kent Veg Boxes' (www.kentvegbox.com) and they are the closest business of this kind near us and the only one in Maidstone. I have tried calling them twice today with no reply, I will try again but in the meantime Vic has sent an email to them outlining what we would like to do and asking them to see if they can give permission to us to carry out the filming.

Digital News Production (Planning 20) why farming in kent email response

We have had a response from 'Why Farming Matters in Kent' after the email I have sent them. They have sent me two documents. The first document is an Agriculture Sector Report for Businesses in Kent from 2009, and the second is another report on the Agriculture in Kent for 2013. These document will be very useful for finding statistics and facts for our story, even though our story is focused on the organic vegetable boxes, we are going to relate it to see if it is helping people working in Agriculture/Farming and the industry in Kent as a whole. The email I received as well as the document covers are below.

Dear Charlie

I am copying in Catherine from the NFU who may have some additional
Kent based information about the rural sector in Kent.

In the meantime I have attached two reports which may be of
assistance. If you need names of any farmers you may wish to talk to,
please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Digital News Production (Nightingale Script 2 Draft)

This is the second draft of our Nightingale report script. We have added the statement provided from Land Securities on the subject as well as more detail into the story. We are waiting for an email back from an RSPB representative, but as they are not messaging back we will look for a back up interview that would be a suitable replacement.

Digital News Production (News Presenter Script Draft 1)

This is the first draft of the script our main presenter will be using for our news production. There is missing parts we need to put in such as mentioning the organic veg box story as well as what we are going to say initially about the Nightingale story.

Digital News Production (Planning 19)

I have looked online to see if I could get amy more information on farming in Kent as well as vegetable box schemes. I have found a website 'Why Farming Matters in Kent' (wfminkent.co.uk) which is a project set up to raise awareness of the importance of the farming industry in Kent. This website has vast amounts of information that we can use in our news piece such as what vegetable box schemes are, statistics on the agriculture in Kent, basically all the information we need. Their website had lots of information on farming in Kent, but I have emailed them to see what other information they have that might not be available on their website. Email is bellow.

Hello, my name is Charlie Ansell and I am a student at UCA Rochester.

I am Currently studying a News Production Unit where we have to produce a news piece suitable for television broadcast. I am very interested in producing a news piece based on the importance of farming in Kent, as well as reporting on misconceptions people may have about farming, horticulture and agriculture.

The information I have looked at on your website has given me a lot of help with planning my piece, so thank you very much for that. I have strong feelings towards your cause due to the overlooked importance of farming in general and I hope my work will raise awareness to your cause.

If there is any other information that is not available on your website about your project, It would be a great help to me if you could send me it please, as long as it is of no trouble of course.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely
Charlie Ansell

Digital News Production (Planning 18)

After speaking to my group today, we have decided to create a news piece on organic vegetable box schemes. Organic vegetable box schemes are where local farmers can sell boxes of their produce (veg, fruit, eggs, meat etc.) to people and deliver it to them. Our angle with this story will be whether it is worth using these services instead of going to your local supermarket for produce, comparing them by price, worth for money and quality. We will also discuss about how these schemes are helping the farming industry in Kent as well as what the general public would choose, organic local produce or imported goods, as well as seeing if they would rather choose price over quality or the other way round. We are currently researching more into this by seeing if there are any local veg box schemes in the Maidstone area.
