For homework I had to write a pitch for a story I found in a newspaper. I had to choose a story that has the most potential to be turned into a film, meaning it has to have the three ingredients to make a good story; a goal for the protagonist to aim for, a problem that they have to overcome and a change for the protagonist to have. I chose a story I found in 'The Sun' newspaper about a young boy who wants to play football but he is allergic to grass, so an AstroTurf manufacturer gave his parents free AstroTurf for him to play football on. The pitch I wrote for the story was:
'A dramatic tale of a young boys battle against all the odds to live the life he's always dreamt of.'
I didn't mention the fact he was a boy allergic to grass because I thought it would put off people from being interested in the story, so I tried to oversell it to make it sound better. But it turned out that doing this had made the story come off as dull and boring. I overlooked how interesting and original the story actually was and I didn't mention the goal and the problem, which would have grabbed the audiences attention straight away. So I changed my pitch to include the problem and goal. The improved pitch is now:
'A dramatic tale of a young boys battle against all the odds to play football when he discovers he is allergic to grass'.
