I have been given the task of looking into the visual style of our documentary. The decision of taking this responsibility was an easy one to make as I believe I have a creative side which I can put well into this project. But, during the last unit (Directions Unit) I got carried away with this and did not focus on the main aspect of the project, which was directing. This affected the outcome of my project massively in a negative way and I did not get a good grade. To ensure that the same outcome does not occur again, I will be looking at different documentaries and observing how and why they used their visual style.
All that I have noticed so far is that the visual style has to reflect the theme of the documentary, so my initial idea is to use colours to foreshadow the topics that will be raised in each interview. So for example, if an interview in the documentary includes upsetting personal stories there would be dark dull tones shown to express the interviewees expressions. The only problem with this is that it may come across like a gimmick and take away the emotion already shown on the screen, so if I do decide on this route to go down I will ensure that I will not go over the top with the colours, it will be edited slightly.
